Language models and AI are transforming the way we work. At OCTA, we use this technology to provide practical support to our pharmacies in their day-to-day work. The team at Science builds and maintains these AI solutions, under the guidance of PhD-level scientists with a medical or pharmaceutical background; they speak the pharmacist’s language and understand their needs.
Case study: the review tool
One example of this is the tool we have developed for medication reviews. As the relevant data is already available, medication reviews can be completed more quickly – an improvement that is immediately noticeable in the pharmacies already using it. Our team at OCTA Science builds and maintains these kinds of AI solutions under the guidance of PhD-level scientists with subject-matter expertise. In this way, we make complex science and data immediately usable for our own colleagues and pharmacies.

The tools behind our solutions
For our projects within OCTA, we do not use a single standard tool, but rather a combination of techniques — depending on the specific requirements.
SURUS Our in-house language model SURUS is the language model we have developed ourselves, featuring named entity recognition and bespoke ontologies. We use it to analyse and structure text in a matter of seconds, with an accuracy of over 95 per cent.
SURUS - search engine Using SURUS as a basis, we have built a search tool that enables colleagues within OCTA to quickly search, analyse and visualise complex scientific data — without it taking up too much time.
Large Language Models As well as SURUS, we also use existing language models, for example for structuring data, carrying out analyses and writing texts.
Database integrations & plug-ins We combine internal and external data sources — such as clinical trials and IP data — to generate actionable insights for OCTA.
Interactive dashboards Our projects often result in a clear and organised dashboard that allows colleagues to filter, sort and create their own views — even without a background in data science.
